Smaller incision, less damage, quicker recovery. High Flex TKA allows patients to bend their knees safety to 155 degrees so they, especially Asians, can continue their daily activities, including squatting and sitting with their legs folded back to one side while praying.
Associate Professor Dr. Viroj Kawinwonggowit, M.D., a skillful surgeon specializing in Total Knee Arthroplasty (TKA) surgery, is presenting further benefits of “Minimally Invasive Surgery for Total Knee Arthroplasty (MIS TKA) with special prosthesis — High Flexion Total Knee prosthesis (High Flexion TKA)” which can support the knee-bending activities that Asian people normally do, such as gardening or praying.
High Flexion TKA offers flexibility that helps all patients, especially Asians, to continue doing their daily activities since Thai/Asian cultures and lifestyles include a good deal of squat activities such as gardening, praying among others. However, the patients’ ability to bend their knees is depends on several factors such as the strength of the knee structure (muscles, tendons and ligaments), medical surgical techniques and the patients’ condition prior to the operation. For example, if, before the surgery, patients can bend their knees to around 110 degrees, after the operation with the new special prosthesis — High Flexion TKA, with good surgery technique, they often will be able to bend their knees safely at 155 degrees.
Associate Professor Dr. Viroj Kawinwonggowit, M.D., Department of Orthopedics, Faculty of Medicine, Ramathibodi Hospital, Mahidol University, is an experienced surgeon for Minimally Invasive Surgery for Total Knee Arthroplasty — MIS TKA, and he has done the MIS TKA since 2004, on close to 200 patients.
From his extensive experience in TKA surgery, he aims to help all patients keep up with their daily activities. Prosthetic designs that safely accommodate deep flexion are becoming increasingly important. The High Flexion TKA is designed to safely accommodate flexion of up to 155 degrees. The patient who has gone through TKA surgery with normal prosthesis, which can support the flexion activity at 130 degrees, can damage their knees by over flexion in activities such as squatting. However, the new type of High Flexion TKA is a better solution for Asian patients since it supports high flexion activities (up to 155 degree). The High Flexion TKA can be used in all patients, including those who do not appear to have the need to achieve higher flexion.
“Various features of the enhanced High Flexion TKA can help patients to bend their knee safely to 155 degrees. After the operation, they can go on with their normal daily activities”, stated Associate Professor Dr. Viroj Kawinwonggowit. “Thai and Asian people have a lot of squat activities. Some patients who have gone through the TKA surgery with normal prosthesis can damage their knees by over flexion but the new type of High Flexion TKA is safer. So, the combination of MIS TKA procedure together with the high flexion total knee prosthesis can allow the patients to bend their knees to 155 degrees.”
Minimally Invasive Surgery for Total Knee Arthroplasty (MIS TKA) is a method of performing a knee replacement. It needs a smaller incision; lessening the cut from 7 to 9 inches long down to only 4 to 5 inches long. This means that there will be potentially less damage to the tissue around the knee resulting in significantly less pain and less scar tissue. Just over a decade ago, Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) was introduced and immediately recognized and used widely in general and thoracic surgery. Today, MIS has become the standard of care for many procedures and has become widely accepted in nearly all-medical specialties, often replacing traditional, open surgery. With enhanced special High Flexion TKA, it can be an especially effective solution for Asian people, because it supports the high flexion activities (at 155 degrees) so patients can continue doing their daily activities.
