Bangkok--11 Apr--SET
The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) Board of Governors (BOG) approved a THB 55 million (USD 1.41 million) budget to promote education through five projects to be held in conjunction with the Office of the Basic Education Commission (OBEC) and four academic institutions.
Ms. Patareeya Benjapolchai, Executive Vice President and Secretary to the Board, disclosed that the Board resolved on April 5, 2006 to allocate this amount to develop the quality of Thai education.
“The SET Board viewed these projects as on-going and that they would eventually yield sustainable, long-term benefits. The institutions and students will both be supported in their development to their fullest potential, which will also benefit the country,” Ms Benjapolchai said.
The projects to be funded are:
1. Role Model Teacher Project by Mae Fah Luang University, Chiang Rai. The program will accept 265 candidates into a pioneering project held to raise quality standards of teachers at the primary school level in math, English, science, social science, and basic work skills. It will cost approximately THB 32.5 million.
2. Scholarships to Ph.D. students in Economics at Chiang Mai University. Two scholarships will be granted, one to a Thai and one to a foreign student, to help develop knowledgeable individuals who can adjust to changing global conditions.
3. Thai songs on CD by Mahidol University’s College of Music (to be played on special occasions, both nationally and internationally.) The Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra, who will perform the music, receives government support to develop classical music activities in Thailand. Songs selected for recording will represent national history, along with national and royal songs.
4. Language Lab Project by Chulachomklao Royal Military Academy (CRMA). Language study materials will be supplied. Not only CRMA students will benefit, but also staff, their families, and students from nearby schools who can make use of the facilities.
5. Math Teaching Development at the primary school level by OBEC. Aimed at Grade 1 to 6 teachers, the grant will be used to purchase 12,000 CDs, “Tips on Math Teaching”. The CDs will be distributed to 2,000 primary schools including those under OBEC supervision, within the SET networking program, and in the three southernmost provinces.
