Bangkok--21 Apr--PITON Communications
Representing SGS (Thailand) Ltd, the Business Manager of the Minerals, Marine, Environmental and Industrial Services, Mr Jirote Na Nakorn, announced the presentation ceremony certifying the Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA). MRTA has passed the IEQ standard (Indoor Environmental Quality), certified by SGS. This presentation ceremony is an important step for the MRTA to assure the public that MRTA is concerned with the health of the public, and that MRTA realizes that air pollution and the environment can affect the health of commuters and customers.
SGS is the first company in Thailand to provide services regarding air quality control. SGS can provide testing and certification services for companies nationwide for a range of air quality control needs. SGS was the first company in Thailand whose central concern has been the public health in communal spaces where the environment may be potentially dangerous. SGS realizing the importance of this issue has progressively developed technology for implementing air quality certification services in the country. SGS certifies not only mass transportation, but buildings of all sorts including hospitals, theaters, and department stores; in addition SGS plans to certify airplanes and the buses as well.
Mr Jirote Na Nakorn said, “We are very pleased and honored that the Mass Rapid Transit Authority has used our services. They have cooperated fully and allowed SGS to certify every station in Bangkok. I like the vision of MRTA executive team; they are concerned with the health of the public. I’m pleased to I’m pleased to say congratulation to the MRT that passes IEQ standard.”
“For the past few years SGS has tried to encourage building owners and companies to see the importance of air quality, as most people spend 90% of their time at work and inside buildings. However, as there is no legal penalty, owners have seen it as an expense not a benefit. At present, most private companies, especially those owned by foreigners and the government have changed their vision, as they realize that the environment and pollution can affect not just health, but money and time,” said Mr. Na Nakorn.
Indoor Environment Quality Certification Standard for Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand
MRTA’s 18 stations around Bangkok. This certification requires testing for CO2, CO, temperature, relative humidity, airborne bacteria, yeast and mold.
Dr. Soisuda Kasornthong, a representative from the Ministry of Public Health said, “The pollution doesn’t affect a person in a short period of time, but if we are continually exposed to yeast, mold or bacteria for an extended duration, it will become apparent in allergies, running nose, stuffed nose, headaches and other symptoms of over-exposure to toxins caused by bacteria. It can damage organs such as the pancreas and nervous system, however, protection is provided by checking the air’s condition to make sure that the quality is clean and if found not to be clean, to then rid it of any bacteria; temperature control also helps.”
Mr. Jirote Na Nakorn added “Besides the MRTA we plan to certify Bangkok City Hall, Buildings, Hospitals and Theaters. We’re interested in collaborating with the government and coordinating with Department of disease from career and environment, Department of Disease Control from Ministry of Public Health, to provide information and statistics on each building that SGS has certified. This will help private companies and government sections to appreciate this important issue of air quality control”
