Bangkok--24 Apr--Bumrungrad International
Bumrungrad International is once again in the spotlight for its leadership in medical tourism.
Thailand’s premier hospital was again featured on national television in the United States. The NBC Today Show, the number one rated morning news program in America, featured Bumrungrad as part of its 3-day series on medical tourism.
Millions of viewers around the United States learned how Bumrungrad International is the favored destination for over 50,000 Americans who travel overseas each year for medical treatment. The segment, which aired on Thursday morning, April 20, highlighted the hospital’s medical and surgical capabilities and its leadership position in the fast growing medical tourism field.
The segment highlighted the case of Mrs. Lindy Gunderson, a 60 year old American retiree living in Eureka Springs, Arkansas, who traveled to Bumrungrad for spinal surgery after she injured her back in an automobile accident. Ms. Gunderson, who is uninsured, saw the CBS 60 Minutes segment featuring Bumrungrad and decided to travel here for surgery. The quality of care, she said, was “just outstanding.”
The segment also featured an interview with Bumrungrad International Group CEO, Curtis Schroeder. “The exposure for us is just huge,” the American CEO noted. “Programs like the Today Show and 60 Minutes are educating people in North America about the quality of medical treatment they can get at Bumrungrad International and the cost savings of overseas care.”
Bumrungrad International has seen a major increase in patients from the USA and Canada. This year alone, the hospital has been featured on national television in Canada, Conde Naste Traveller, and a host of on-line journals, like e-Women’s News. The combination of quality and affordability seems to have piqued the interest of more and more North Americans, who can neither afford nor access healthcare in their countries.
In a separate but related story, Singapore’s former Prime Minister and elder statesman, Lee Kuan Yew, mentioned Bumrungrad Hospital in a speech he gave commemorating Singapore General Hospital’s 185th Anniversary. In his April 16 speech, Minister Lee addressed the need for Singapore to become more competitive as a medical hub, and used Bumrungrad as an example, stating, “Bumrungrad Hospital in Bangkok alone sees more foreign patients than all the Singapore hospitals combined.”
