Business Software Alliance (BSA) together with Department of Special Investigation, Thai Internet Service Provider Association — TISPA and INET Foundation announced the launch of the “Right Click Campaign”. This joint campaign intends to educate those using the internet on how to best protect themselves on-line. Consumers and Internet users will be provided with resources on what steps and precautions they need to take to enjoy a safe and legal on line experience. The associated Right Click Microsite developed for this purpose is a key channel through which audiences can access tips and useful pointers on surfing the internet safely and avoid being fooled into purchasing pirate software.
Mr. Tarun Sawney, BSA’s Director for Anti Piracy, Asia, said “We are very grateful for the support that DSI, TISPA and INET Foundation have given us and also to www.tarad.com , www.thaisecondhand.com and www.pramool.com who have enthusiastically linked the Right Click Microsite on their respective websites.”
Speaking at the launch, the BSA’s Director for Anti-piracy, Asia, Tarun Sawney, said that while the Internet has revolutionized our abilities to gather information, communicate and engage in e-commerce, its global reach is also being exploited by unscrupulous parties to conduct illegal activities. Besides online frauds, intellectual property thefts and software piracy that threaten regular Net users, the Internet provides a medium through which unscrupulous people can harm computers by compromising valuable personal and critical data. As such, the BSA’s Right Click campaign aims to teach frequent computer users on how to be responsible Internet surfers.
“We want to create better awareness on how users can proactively protect themselves from online threats including dubious web sites and email spam selling unlicensed or pirated software. Many users sometimes are duped into purchasing what looks to be genuine software online only to find out they are not upon purchase. The Right Click tips provided on the BSA web site ( www.bsa.org/thailand ) can help these users become more discerning in their purchase.”
On the topic of Internet piracy Sawney said that it comes in many different forms and is serious enough of a threat that it warrants attention before it mushrooms into an even bigger problem. He explained, “The BSA combs the Internet for sites that offer pirated software. Once such a site is identified, we issue a letter requesting that the ISP concerned take steps to have the infringing content removed from the site.
ISPs almost always oblige as they do not want to risk legal problems because of the activities of their users. In 2005 the BSA identified close to 8,000 infringing sites and issued a total of 2,500 letters requesting that the ISPs concerned take steps to remove the infringing content from their site.”
The event also featured of guest speakers from Department of Special Investigation, Thai Internet Service Provider Association, and INET Foundation. The topics highlighted included copyright issues when purchasing software online, various types of online threats and the precautionary steps Internet surfers can take to counter those threats.
“DSI is an enforcement authority who focuses on serious crime that can impact on the country’s economy, society, homeland security and international relations. One of DSI’s responsibilities is taking care of copyright issues. Internet users or online shoppers are a classic sample of those who have either limited knowledge or have no idea of what piracy is. Therefore, DSI supports the BSA led Right Click campaign by endorsing educational activities that we hope will expand to a wider audience said Pol.Col Yanaphon Youngyuen.
Ms Morakot Kulthamyothin, the President of TISPA and also Internet Thailand’s Deputy Managing Director said “Today, there is clear evidence showing that spy ware, viruses and unwanted programs are often attached to emails. As such, taking steps to be secure on the Internet is essential. The Tips referred to in this campaign on how to protect yourself are very important to Internet users. The campaign’s microsite will be posted on the association’s website and also association’s members can utilize or publicize this useful information with their respective customers.
Ms Srida Tanta-atipanit, INET Foundation manager said “INET Foundation and the Right Click campaign share the same objectives in giving information of the hidden dangers on the Internet. To avoid a negative on line experience, users must be aware of these dangers. The Foundation therefore supports such safety related educational initiatives and the resources that may be found at the Online Parent Network and the BSA’s Right Click microsite.”
“More information about the campaign can be found at www.bsa.org/thailand . The Right Click microsite was designed by the Webmaster Association of Thailand. IAt this microsite, interested audiences can search for useful tips and pointers on how to protect themselves and their computers on the internet” Mr. Sawney summarized.
