Bangkok--17 May--Chiva-Som International Health Resorts
Why not combine your visit to Chiva-Som with Thailand’s most eagerly anticipated Royal event of the year; the Royal Barge Procession on the River of Kings on June 12th 2006.
Celebrating His Majesty the King Bhumibol Adulyadej, the world’s longest reigning monarch, Diamond Jubilee, the grand city of Bangkok will showcase what is recognized as one of the world’s finest displays of Thai arts and culture, in a procession consisting of 52 barges, 1200 meters long and 90 meters wide manned by 2400 oarsmen including the King’s magnificent Golden Swan Barge as they glide down Chao Phraya river.
After witnessing the grandeur of this rarely held royal ceremony, enjoy Chiva-Som “the Haven of Life” alongside royal dignitaries in His Majesty’s residential seaside town of Hua Hin.
The Royal Barge Procession dates back to the Sukhothai period in the 13th century when Kings would travel by water accompanied by war ships demonstrating their power and might. The King’s royal barge the Subanahongsa or Golden Swan is the most ornate of the barges. It was first constructed in1782 by Rama I and was in constant use until it became too old to repair. Rama VI then commanded the construction of its successor, also named the Subabahongsa which is believed to have been made from the trunk of a single teak tree and it is said the master craftsman threw away his tools and vowed never to work again.
