Executives from Shin Satellite Public Company Limited and China Satellite Communications Corporation (China Satcom) today declared the IPSTAR Gateway in Beijing, China, open. The gateway, the first true broadband satellite gateway in the country is able to provide services to the northern part of China. Two more gateways, at Shanghai and Guangzhou, will be constructed this year to allow China Satcom to provide high speed communications services to the whole country.
Mr. Zhang Hainan, President of China Satcom said that the new IPSTAR Gateway would play an important part in enabling China Satcom to provide a variety of communications services to increase the number of broadband users.
Dr. Dumrong Kasemset, Chairman of Shin Satellite’s Executive Committee, said, “IPSTAR is the most modern and efficient wireless broadband solution in the Asia Pacific Region today. In China we are looking at a huge market with many large, unserved communities. Many of them require basic communications infrastructure, and our system could well handle up to one million people in China alone.”
China Satcom was set up as part of the Chinese Government’s industry plan to extend satellite services to the country. The company includes several enterprises, China Telecommunications Broadband Satellite Corporation, China Orient Telecommunications Satellite Co. Ltd., China Space Mobile Satellite Communication Co. Ltd., China Post & Telecommunications Translation Service Corporation and China Telecom (Hong Kong) Chinasat Corporation.
China Satcom expects to offer satellite-based broadband leased lines, or Virtual Private Networks (VPN), various telephony, data and multimedia services for corporate customers, among other high speed services.
Shin Satellite launched Thaicom 4 (IPSTAR), the world’s largest commercial satellite, in August 2005 to provide the Asia-Pacific Region with high-speed Internet access and Internet Protocol applications including voice, data and multimedia.
