Filming has begun on location in Phuket and Khao Lak, Thailand, on the two-part miniseries TSUNAMI, an HBO Films Presentation in association with BBC Drama of a Kudos Film and Television Production, it was announced today by Colin Callender, president, HBO Films.
Tim Roth (Academy Award(R) nominee for Rob Roy; Dark Water), Chiwetel Ejiofor (Dirty Pretty Things, Kinky Boots), Sophie Okonedo (Academy Award(R) nominee for Hotel Rwanda), Hugh Bonneville (Notting Hill), Gina McKee (Notting Hill, Scenes Of A Sexual Nature) and Toni Collette (Academy Award(R) nominee for The Sixth Sense; In Her Shoes) lead the cast in this unique and deeply affecting drama, which is inspired by true accounts and focuses on the harrowing aftermath of the tsunami that devastated the Andaman coast of Thailand in December 2004.
“TSUNAMI is a compelling story of survival and courage,” said Callender. “The images of the tragedy have seared our memories, and this miniseries follows in the HBO tradition of getting behind the headlines to reveal the human drama of those caught up in events outside their control. We have assembled an extraordinary creative team of actors and filmmakers, dedicated to exploring the cultural and personal fault lines that can be ruptured by such a catastrophe.”
Directed by Bharat Nalluri (Spooks, Life on Mars) and produced by Finola Dwyer (The Hamburg Cell) from a script by Abi Morgan (Sex Traffic), TSUNAMI is executive produced by Jane Featherstone and Derek Wax for Kudos. Kary Antholis, senior vice president, HBO Films, is the executive in charge of the project. Lucy Richer is Joint Head of Independent Drama for BBC.
A tale of personal loss, TSUNAMI follows a group of characters whose lives are irrevocably transformed by the cataclysmic natural disaster. A young couple searching for their child, an Englishwoman whose husband and son are missing, an ambitious reporter, a relief worker, and an overwhelmed British official are among those whose stories are followed.
TSUNAMI is based on extensive research and interviews, and explores universal questions about how governments, media and aid agencies respond when they are tested.
