Bangkok--30 May--Supremo
Surint Omya Chemicals (Thailand) Co.,Ltd., Thailand’s largest calcium carbonate manufacturer and distributor, is increasing its domestic production capacity to serve the rising demand of various industries while establishing Thailand’s first and Asia’s largest calcite “Crushing Plant” to fully utilize the mineral as a part of its dedicated environment policy. The total domestic investment is over 800 million bath with 20% expected annual growth. Moreover, the company is increasing its investment by opening the hi-end calcium carbonate plant in Vietnam worth 400 million bath as the base to expand market throughout the region. To support the government’s energy-saving policy, Surint Omya is successful in applying the NGV as an alternative energy source that can reduce 40% of diesel consumption.
Sasis Monsereenusorn, CEO of Surint Omya Chemicals (Thailand) Co.,Ltd., reveals the general view of the company. With 25 years of great success, Surint Omya has been in business of calcium carbonate, which is the significant raw material in many industries, including paper, rubber, plastic and paints. The company has its own mine to supply sufficient calcite for over next 50 years and its plant in Lopburi province has the highest production capacity in Thailand since it can produce 360,000 metric tons annually. 80% of the production will emphasize on hi-end calcium carbonate and Surint Omya has 60% of the market share in this hi-end mineral. It is therefore considered as the market leader. Currently, Thailand has 800,000-metric tons/year production capacity from approximately 10 manufacturers and 95% of the products are for domestic use.
Trust and Confidence from Customers
Producing the high quality calcium carbonate to meet customer’s requirement, Surint Omya conducts the research and development with the customers to improve their product quality and decrease production cost. Currently, the company has leading customers in various industries, including ICI Paints (Thailand) Ltd., TOA Paint (Thailand) Ltd., Thai Plastic and Chemicals PLC., The Nawaplastic Industries Co., Ltd., Thai Pipe Industry Co.,Ltd., Bangkok Cable Ltd., Advance Agro PLC., Thai Paper Co.,Ltd., Unilever Thai Holdings Ltd. and Colgate — Palmolive (Thailand) Ltd.
800-MB Domestic Investment
Surint Omya invested 800 baht in expanding its plant with 200,000-metric tons/year capacity, which will be completed in August 2006 in response to the increasing demand from many manufacturers, such as paper, plastic and paint industries. Calcium carbonate also has high potential as the important material in main industries, including agriculture and construction. Meanwhile, the company establishes Thailand’s first and the Asia largest calcite “Crushing Plant” starting with 700,000 metric tons/year capacity, and then fully operating with 2,000,000 metric tons/year capacity in the near future. The crushing plant can efficiently utilize the calcite by maintaining the purity level of the mineral and reduce the waste during the production process.
The great pace to Vietnam
With the dramatically high economic growth rate and industry expansion, Vietnam becomes one of the most attractive countries for international investors. Surint Omya will expand its business by operating the new plant in Vietnam with 100,000 metric tons/year capacity. The 400 million-baht plant will be in completion in December 2006. The company will focus on producing the hi-end calcium carbonate for the paper, rubber, plastic and paint industries, including the industries that require the high quality material for the export.
Surint Omya: The successful story about NGV
Since August 2005, Surint Omya has dedicated itself to improving the environment by experiment the NGV converted engine with 45 trucks that can reduce 40% of the diesel consumption. Moreover, the company, with the support by PTT Public Company Limited, established Thailand’s first NGV gas station of PTT itself in Surint Omya factory and the operation already started in April.
Calcium Carbonate
Calcium Carbonate (CaCO3) is a non-toxic and colourless chemical compound, which is a common substance found as rock in all parts of the world and the main component of seashells and the shell of snails. Calcium carbonate is commonly used medicinally as a calcium supplement or as an antacid. It is also the active ingredient in agricultural lime. The main use of calcium carbonate is in the construction industry as an extender in paints and as filler in plastics and PVC.
Production Process
1. Ground Calcium Carbonate (GCC): It is produced by crushing the natural calcium carbonate such as limestone, marble, chalk and calcite. Many production processes, including size reduction and classification, can be made to obtain the products in various sizes in order to serve the market requirement.
2. Precipctated Calcium Carbonate (PCC): It is produced by crystallizing GCC into the small micron of tasteless, odorless and insoluble powder.
Product
1. Dry Powder: The crushed natural calcium carbonate, which is 1-147 micron white powder, used in paper, paint, rubber industry, powder detergent, and toothpaste.
2. Surface Coated Product: The 1-15 micron of calcium carbonate with coating process, used in plastic, PVC and rubber industry
3. Uncoated Product: The solid calcium carbonate, which is the mixture between natural calcium carbonate and plastic beads, used in plastic industry, such as pipe, tableware and insulator.
4. Slurry Product: Mostly used in the paper industry.
