Bangkok--27 Jun--SET
About two thousand investors and the general public attended the ‘Money Channel Road Show’ on June 25, keen to learn more about savings and investment, as uncertain times seem to increase demand for financial education.
This year’s first ‘Money Channel Road Show’, held in Udon Thani, was a success, President of The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) Ms. Patareeya Benjapolchai declared, with visitors coming from both within the province and outside. Participating companies echoed the President’s sentiments, having dealt with about 2,000 visitors, including 800 young people, inquiring about their products and services.
“After Nakorn Ratchasima and Khon Kaen, Udon Thani has the third highest monthly securities business turnover in the Northeastern region, at THB 1,473.03 million (approx. USD 38.06 million).
“For the first five months y-o-y, the decrease in the Northeastern region’s turnover has been relatively slight. The region shows great potential, as investors here appear to be fairly strong, and not easily unnerved by short-term fluctuations,” said Ms. Patareeya.
Provincial Governor Mr. Jaruek Prinyapol opened the road show, asserting that Udon Thani is the region’s international trade hub. Exports from Udon Thani are around THB 20 billion, 66% of the THB 30 billion from all nine provinces on the Mae Khong River.
Udon Thani is a gateway to Indochina, being one of three regional world heritage cities -- the other two being Lao PDR’s Luang Prabang, and Vietnam’s Quang Binh-- soon to be connected to form a regional tourism network. Money Channel Road Show, consistent with Udon Thani’s commercial strategy, has contributed to inter-province trade.
Managing Director of Family Know How Co., Ltd. Mr. Ratchapol Laovanitch noted the success of the first road show, with most visitors coming in family groups. Activities for the children included a mini-showcase of the ”Ood-Eed” Pig and the “Magic Piggy Bank”, hand-puppets, drawing, painting and gifts, such as piggy banks and storybooks, all with an appropriate personal savings message.
“This is the first time that we have combined education activities for grown-ups with entertainment for children,” said Mr. Ratchapol.
The Udon Thani Money Channel Road Show hosted more than 20 participating organizations, including nine securities, three asset management and five listed companies, together with the Thai Investors’ Association, SET and its subsidiaries. The next road show is to be in November 2006 in Songkhla province.
