Ford Thailand and Habitat for Humanity International (HFHI) handed over new houses to 21 families in Khao Lak, Phang Nga province, whose houses were destroyed in the 2004 Asian tsunami tragedy.
The houses were built under the “Rebuilding Lives and Homes” initiative. The project is a part of the Ford Volunteer Corps initiated by Ford Motor Company’s CEO Bill Ford, in accordance with the company’s Better World vision. In Thailand, Ford Thailand has cooperated with HFHI in building houses and other facilities for people in Khao Lak area who are affected by the Asian tsunami.
Mr. Komkrit Nongsawat, Director — Retail Marketing, Ford Thailand, said, “Almost two years after the tsunami tragedy, we have been working hard on the “Rebuilding Lives and Homes” project. Employees, from the top management to operational level, of Ford Thailand and affiliates have volunteered to come down to Khao Lak every weekend to gradually help building new homes to the tsunami victims. Building houses under the strong sunlight is a very tough work. However, it is worthwhile to see that our sweat and energy could finally help other people. It is great to know that we are contributing to creating the “Better World” which is one of the key pillars of Ford Motor Company’s operation.”
The “Rebuilding Lives and Homes” Project comprises two phases. During the first phase, the volunteers helped make roof tiles, which are free of the carcinogenic substance — asbestos. The second phase was the actual house building in which Ford volunteers and the villagers worked hand in hands. They were supported by HFHI’s workers who have greater experience in house building.
“The “Rebuilding Lives and Homes” is a great project. It is a platform for us to extend a helping hand to the needed ones. At the same time, the project offered us an opportunity to build close relationship with people living in Khao Lak, as well as among the volunteers themselves. The reward we receive is invaluable. It’s the good understanding and strong bonding among members in a community, including villagers, Ford Thailand, Ford dealers and suppliers and concerned organizations. These lay a strong foundation for a healthy and happy society in the future,” concluded Komkrit.
Ford is among the first private organizations that helped the tsunami victims. From day one, Ford dealers used Ford vehicles to help rescue the injured and search for the missing while Ford Thailand delivered 4x4 Ford Ranger to Phang Nga province, two ambulances to the Thai Red Cross Society and other assistances including clothes, medicines, drinking water, other necessities. In the longer term, Ford Thailand has put enormous efforts in returning a happy life to people affected by the Asian tsunami through the “Rebuilding Lives and Homes” project.
