In the average four—person household, a vacuum cleaner will be in operation for 50 hours a year — providing indispensable help with the household chores. Thanks to sophisticated technology, today’s vacuum cleaners are easy-to-use electrical appliances whose excellent suction power effortlessly gets rid of dust and dirt. However the beginnings of the vacuum cleaner were very different: A hundred years ago, they were large and heavy, and noisy enough to gain the respect and fear of many a housemaid. In 1906, Siemens pioneered the field by offering German households its first vacuum cleaner, in the shape of the “dust suction pump” — a revolution in floor care. Over the years, the appliances became smaller, their performance increased, and the effort required on the user’s part diminished. Today Siemens, one of the leading brands in the floor care sector, with 100 years of experience, is presenting an early vision of the future: A robot vacuum cleaner which goes about its floor cleaning tasks completely independently.
It all began with a three-hundredweight appliance on wheels, powered by a less-than-silent motor, in the shape of the first electrical “Siemens dust suction pump”. This development marked a pioneering innovation on the part of Siemens’ engineers. Because here was an appliance that was more than just a mechanized broom, and finally helped hotels and offices in particular to achieve thorough cleanliness. When small electric motors began to be produced, and became affordable for household use, the onward march of the vacuum cleaner finally put paid to labor-intensive cleaning methods.
Advanced floor care technology conquers the household
During the twenties and thirties three of Siemens vacuum cleaner ranges symbolized the breakthrough of modern floor care technology: The design of the Protos vacuum cleaner launched in 1924 meant it was regarded as the predecessor of the modern cylinder vacuum cleaner. 1931 saw the arrival of the ultra-quiet and powerful “Super” series of models, production of which continued into the seventies thanks to a program of continuous development. In 1935, the competitively-priced and compact “RAPID” handheld cleaner finally won over the country’s households, and the hearts of its housewives.
After the Second World War, cleaning appliances became increasingly common in German households, especially with the growing popularity of carpeted floors. Siemens was thus able to celebrate a special milestone as long ago as 1954, when the millionth vacuum cleaner rolled off the production line. And development of the appliances proceeded at a dramatic pace: 1961 saw series production of Siemens’ first plastic-bodied handheld vacuum cleaner commence. In 1970, the first electronic vacuum was launched, followed ten years later by the first appliance with automatic suction control. 1984 saw Siemens manufacture its first brush-equipped vacuum cleaner.
Innovative solutions offering power and convenient floor care
In 2004, floor care technology advanced still further, with the introduction of the first cleaning robot: This intelligent cleaning aid hunts dirt on its own, taking on all the floor cleaning chores fully automatically. And the same year brought another innovation with the launch of the first vacuum cleaner with “wet-cleaning” capability.
When it comes to performance, Siemens vacuum cleaners are out in front to this day. With the most powerful appliances in their class, dust and dirt stand no chance. Intelligent dust-retention and filter systems such as the air flow control system? with air safe? ensure that even particulate dust is filtered out of the ingested air. Thanks to these features, Siemens vacuum cleaners make a real contribution to purifying the air in a room, improving living conditions within the home.
