Elephant polo event in Thailand promotes protection of endangered species
DHL Global Mail takes part in this year’s “King’s Cup” Elephant Polo Tournament in Thailand with a team of its own and, at the same time, acts as one of the main sponsors. By participating in this event, the international mail specialists of Deutsche Post World Net support the efforts to protect the endangered elephant population of Thailand.
All profits arising from the event, which will take place in the Golden Triangle, located 60 kilometers from the city of Chiang Rai in Northern Thailand, from 4th to 10th September, will be donated to the National Elephant Institute’s Thai Elephant Conservation Centre. Over the past five years, the event has raised around US$150,000 for the conservation and welfare of Thailand’s elephants, the so called ‘Kings of the Jungle’.
“Supporting the Elephant Polo tournament — as a not so common sport - demonstrates that DHL Global Mail is willing to go unusual ways for the greater benefit of both the community and of course for our customers. I am very happy that we can unite behind a common cause together with our invited partners,” said Michael Culme-Seymour, CEO Asia Pacific & Emerging Markets, DHL Global Mail.
The donations gathered during the event will be used exclusively for the protection of the Thai elephant, which is held in high regard among the public because of its role as heraldic animal of the royal family and as the traditional beast of burden. The existence of the Thai elephant is seriously endangered as the population has decreased from 100,000 specimens in former times to 2,500 animals today.
“As a responsible corporate citizen, DHL Global Mail is proud to support the ‘King’s Cup’ for the second year as it showcases our commitment for the protection of our environment”, added Jan-Willem Adrian, Commercial Director Asia Pacific, DHL Global Mail.
The event is certain to raise awareness about the Thai elephant’s situation not only in Thailand, where the tournament is held, but also across the region and beyond due to the expected broad media coverage.
