Bangkok--11 Sep--Bhum PR
Bangkok’s 8th International Festival of Dance and Music organized by International Cultural Promotion will stage fabulous “Fado” performance on September 19th, on 19.30 hrs. at Main Hall, Thailand Cultural Center.
Mariza is one of the worlds leading fado singers. Fado is a style of singing now associated with Portugal where it most likely originated in the 1820s. Some researchers have suggested African origins, others, Brazilian. One theory traces its origin to Moorish songs that remained in the quarter of Mouraria in Lisbon. Whatever the origins, Fado is characterized by mournful tunes and lyrics often about the sea or the life of the poor. The music is about longing, and conveys a complex mixture of sadness, pain, nostalgia, happiness and love.
Mariza has updated this genre and is very popular in Europe and the US. Her seductive voice and evocative rhythms have made fado truly universal. She has been nominated this year for Best European Artist in the World Music Awards for BBC Radio 3, an award she already won in 2003. Her latest album Transparent was declared a gold disc in Holland. It also entered the Billboard/Soundscan USA charts in its first week of release at 13 in the World Music Charts and reached the 6th place in the European World Music charts.
