Bangkok--14 Sep--SET
The “2006 Asian Roundtable on Corporate Governance” is underway in Bangkok from September 13 — 15, 2006. “The focus will be on law enforcement and directors’ roles in promoting corporate governance (CG). The program is along normal lines of Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), with case studies from various countries allowing participants to brainstorm, share their insights and propose implementable solutions,” the President of Thailand Securities Depository Co., Ltd., who’s a member and secretary of Thailand’s National Corporate Governance (CG) Sub-Committee on Investors Education and Public Relations, Ms. Sopawadee Lertmanaschai stated.
This event is co-hosted by Thai National Corporate Governance (CG) Committee, Securities and Exchange Commission, The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET), the Thai Institute of Directors Association, and Listed Companies Association. The event is supported by OECD, World Bank Group, and Thailand Securities Depository Co., Ltd.
The organizers are using the event to promote CG in Thailand. On September 13, panelists discussed “CG Development in Thailand: The Three Disciplines”. They covered the development of CG in Thailand from 2002, emphasizing three aspects — regulatory discipline, market discipline, and self-discipline. Participants included executives from listed, securities, and investment management companies; Bank of Thailand, Association of Investment Management Companies, Association of Securities Companies, Federation of Accounting Profession, Federation of Thai Industries, Thai Bankers’ Association, Thai Chamber of Commerce, and Thai Investors’ Association.
The OECD Asian Roundtable on Corporate Governance has been held annually, involving participants from both member and non-member countries in Asia. The event provides opportunities for various nationalities to exchange views on current and sometimes controversial issues to develop solutions appropriate to their respective countries.
“We are honored that Thailand is this year’s host country. It allows international participants to understand the importance we place on CG, and the efforts we’ve made to ensure that Thai CG meets international standards. SET has issued new CG guidelines for public firms, which have been upgraded in line with OECD standards. This will strengthen investor confidence in the whole Thai market,” Ms. Sopawadee concluded.
