Bangkok--21 Sep--TRIS Rating
TRIS Rating expects the peaceful military coup to bring back political stability in a short while. The Democratic Reform Council’s intention to return full power to the people in one year is viewed as an encouraging sign. TRIS Rating also expects to see the Council appoint well-respected and honest persons to serve in the acting cabinet. While the coup will have no immediate effect on ratings of its clients, the rating agency said that it will monitor the situation closely and will review for possible effects over the medium term.
Dr. Warapatr Todhanakasem, president of TRIS Rating, said that the political developments are still unfolding but the overall picture appears to indicate that the Council has a clear intention to step down as soon as possible. The agency believes that the Council will try to appoint well-respected members to the acting cabinet within two weeks and confidence in the economy is expected to return.
Dr. Warapatr said that it is crucial that the Council speeds up every process so that the country’s new constitution is completed and a fair general election is administered within one year. In the meantime, the rating agency will monitor the major economic policies of the new cabinet and assess any potential effects on clients’ ratings.
