Thai Ethoxylate Company Limited, a 50:50 joint venture between Cognis Thailand Limited and PTT Chemical Public Company Limited, today inaugurated a new facility in Rayong, Thailand, that will produce fatty alcohol ethoxylates mainly for customers in the home and personal care industries. This new plant will strengthen the company’s position as the leading producer of fatty alcohol ethoxylates, and help it meet increasing global demand.
Fatty alcohol ethoxylates are made from ethylene oxide and fatty alcohol. They are used as a key raw materials as well as intermediates in the manufacture of various personal and home care products, including shampoos, shower creams, detergents, dish-washing liquids and cleaning agents. Fatty Alcohols are derived from natural sources such as palm kernel oil and coconut oil, keeping in line with Thai Ethoxylate’s strategy of combining performance and sustainability in products based on renewable resources.
The Thai Ethoxylate plant is located in Rayong, south-east of Bangkok, and is very close to a deep-sea port. It is conveniently located for access to raw materials; South-East Asia is the world’s major producer of oleochemicals, and ship and road links make it easy for the company to source these from the region. Ethylene oxide is obtained from the plant of TOC Glycol, a subsidiary of PTT Chemical Public Company Limited.
Dr. Manope Manope Kerdlappol, Director and Acting Managing Director, Thai Ethoxylate Company, Limited, said, “Thai Ethoxylate is the country’s first manufacturer of fatty alcohol ethoxylates, a key raw material for personal and home care business. The opening of the plant today signifies the country’s reduced dependence on this once imported raw material. This means annual savings of over Baht 1,000 million for the country.
