Strong as a standard prosthesis and suitable for MIS TKA, help patients to continue their daily activities quicker
Associate Professor Dr. Viroj Kawinwonggowit, M.D., and Associate Professor Dr. Wiwat Wajanavisith, skillful surgeons specializing in Total Knee Arthroplasty (TKA) surgery are presenting further benefits of “Minimally Invasive Surgery for Total Knee Arthroplasty (MIS TKA) with the Stemmed Tibial Component” at Conference room, 9-Storey Building, 9th Floor at Ramathibodi Hospital.
Associate Professor Dr. Viroj Kawinwonggowit, M.D., Department of Orthopedics, Faculty of Medicine, Ramathibodi Hospital, Mahidol University, is an experienced surgeon for Minimally Invasive Surgery for Total Knee Arthroplasty Procedure, and he has done the MISTM Stemmed Tibial Component since mid of 2006.
Minimally Invasive Surgery for Total Knee Arthroplasty is one method of performing a knee replacement. It uses a smaller incision, 8-10 centimeters long, potentially less damage to the tissue around the knee resulting in significantly less pain and quicker recovery. But, in technically, surgeons has limit on putting prosthesis to replace the old one which this MIS procedure need the special operation tool which make the surgeons work easier. Then, the research of new prosthesis has been developed for smaller incision by using Tibia features separated into 2 parts that can be incorporated into the human structure.
“Orthopaedic department, Ramathibodi Hospital has done 450 Osteoarthritis patients by using MIS for more than 3 years. MIS procedure needs to use the tool designed specially to help surgeons operating in smaller incision. By average, MIS will cut the incision 8-10 centimeters long but the technology of MISTM Stemmed Tibial Component has been developed as the Tibia designed features separated into 2 parts to replace single prosthesis, which is bigger and longer. This development helps physicians working easier on MIS TKA operation in a small incision. The MISTM Stemmed Tibial Component can be incorporated into the human structure so it can help reducing the incision size.” said Associate Professor Dr. Viroj Kawinwonggowit, M.D. Ramathibodi Hospital.
“The technology of MISTM Stemmed Tibial Component helps physicians to put prosthesis to replace the patients’ knee easier. Not only it will be strong as a standard prosthesis, but also it can help surgeons working on MIS procedure easier and more efficient where patients can obtain further benefits: to recover and continue doing their daily activities quicker and have better quality of life — joint painless, walking for a longer distance, light exercise, speed walking, swimming, ballroom dancing, etc.” said Associate Professor Dr. Wiwat Wajanavisith, Ramathibodi Hospital.
The prosthesis contains of 4 parts: 1. Femur 2. Tibia 3. Articular Surface 4. Patella. MISTM Stemmed Tibial Component is a new model of Tibia designed features separated into 2 parts and can be incorporated. When they are incorporated into the human structure, the size and feature are comparable to the standard TKA (Single), which will make MISTM Stemmed Tibial Component strong and have same qualification as the standard TKA.
Nowadays, the new model of prosthesis is well accepted on Orthopaedics in Thailand and worldwide in term of the easier method and reducing the operation time. MISTM Stemmed Tibial Component is an option of prosthesis suitable for MIS, which has limited incision, which is expected that it would draw the interest from Orthopaedic surgeons.
