For the 15th time in 20 years, the SUBWAYา restaurant chain has been once again named the number one franchise opportunity in Entrepreneur magazine’s Annual “Franchise 500” rankings. When the chain was first named the number one franchise by Entrepreneur in 1988, it had about 4,000 locations. Now, the chain operates nearly 27,000 restaurants in 86 countries including Thailand where Subway now has 19 outlets and will expand up to 140 outlets within 2010.
The “Franchise 500” rankings are the most comprehensive franchise rankings in the world and considers many factors, including financial strength and stability, growth rate, the size of the system and start-up costs.
“Where corporate types might see limits, entrepreneurs like Subway President and Co-founder Fred DeLuca see only opportunity,” wrote Nichole L. Torres in the January 2007 issue of Entrepreneur magazine.
According to Fred, the success of the SUBWAYา brand only happens because of franchisees who share an entrepreneurial spirit and vision.
"Subway wrote the book on franchising,” said SUBWAYา franchisee Robert Camillo. “Being ranked number one once again shows that the Subway concept works, which enhances the brand and furthers its reputation. Now that Subway has ventured into more non-traditional venues, such as Wal-Mart, BJ's Wholesale Club and hospitals, more opportunities are being created for entrepreneurs to get into the Subway system while additional consumers are being exposed to the brand."
The SUBWAYา story continues to inspire entrepreneurs throughout the world. This year, it was featured in the newly released book, “Chicken Soup for the Entrepreneur’s Soul.”
Also this year, the restaurant chain opened its 6,200th international location, reaching milestones in: the United Kingdom with 700 locations; Germany with 400 locations; Mexico with 300 locations; 50 locations in Ireland; and opening the first location on the Isle of Man. In addition, the SUBWAYา chain also opened its 6,200th “non-traditional” location, which means you can find a SUBWAYา restaurant in such places as college campuses and schools, amusement parks, airports and convenience stores.
Also, by opening its first North American kosher and halal locations, the SUBWAY chain took steps to reach out to consumer groups who traditionally do not visit fast food establishments due to religious preferences.
According to Fred, these and other initiatives have come from the franchisees, who are taking innovative approaches to running and expanding their own businesses.
“The way we do it is by giving franchisees a fair amount of authority to go forth and get things done and then watching what they are doing and teaching others,” Fred said.
Headquartered in Milford, Conn., the SUBWAYา restaurant chain was co-founded by Fred DeLuca and Dr. Peter Buck in 1965. That partnership, which continues to this day, has made it possible for thousands to build and succeed in their own business.
