Through use of the Blue Coat solution, the housing facility for students studying at Monash University and Monash Medical Center in Melbourne can meet the overall demand for high-speed quality access to Internet content and applications. In particular, International Student House can support quality Voice over IP (VoIP) phone calls for students calling locations all over the world without requiring additional bandwidth.
With the solution from Blue Coat, International Student House has been able to reduce overall bandwidth consumption by 60-70% through local caching and managing P2P applications while also reducing latency by a factor of 20. Before implementing Blue Coat, International Student House would routinely see its Internet gateway connection fully saturated so that many users would not have Internet access, and latency-sensitive applications such as VoIP would not work. Prior to installing the Blue Coat SG appliance, the Internet response time averaged 800-900 milliseconds. Now the response time is typically 20-50 milliseconds.
