Bangkok--7 Mar--SET
Senior executives and board members from The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) will meet with representatives from Thai industry on a trip to Ho Chi Minh City on March 6 — 7. They will meet with members of Thai Business (VN) Association, which counts 67 Thai companies as members. These enterprises are in involved in various industries, including construction materials, publishing, packaging, and automobile parts.
“The trip to Vietnam is to visit potential Thai business there. Businesses in Vietnam have been growing rapidly and are likely to expand their investment. It is thus a great opportunity for us to support Thai businesses to grow as well as helping pave the way for Thais to invest in Thai companies in Vietnem, ” said Ms. Patareeya Benjapolchai, SET President.
The SET delegation will also visit subsidiaries of SET-listed companies. They are C.P. Vietnam Livestock Co., Ltd., which is a subsidairy of Charoen Pokphand Foods PCL; and Amata (Vietnam) Co., Ltd., a subsidairy of Amata Corporation PCL.
During the trip, the delegation will also meet executives of the Ho Chi Minh City Securities Trading Center (HSTC) and Sacombank Securities Company. SET has played a role since 2000 in helping establish and develop the trading system of HSTC. The visit will be an opportunity for SET and HSTC officials to discuss collaboration and how they might create mutual opportunties for the two markets. Also, they will discuss how to support Thai-Vietnamese joint ventures that could be listed on both SET and HSTC.
SET signed a memorandum of understanding with HSTC in 2000, agreeing to assist in the establishment of Vietnam’s first securities exchange. Subsequent assistance has included technological support, training and advice to relevant Vietnamese organizations.
As for the road show to Japan, which was previously scheduled to take place March 10 — 13 as per the invitation of Capital Nomura Securities PCL, SET has now agreed with the Ministry of Finance to postpone the trip for one or two months when investors should be able to receive clearer and more useful information.
“We are in accord that it will be better to postpone the trip, even though we have actually prepared essential information about, for example, government policy on the ‘sufficiency economy’ concept as well as on education, investment, the stock market and SET. We believe relevant conditions will be clearer and complete in the next one or two months, and will therefore benefit investors more. At that time, we will discuss the trip with relevant parties again,” SET President said.
