Bangkok--29 Mar--Standard & Poor's
Standard & Poor's credit and equity analysts, along with outside experts, will examine some of the less-prominent--but promising--emerging market economies at "Beyond BRIC," a Standard & Poor's conference organized in cooperation with The Asia Society and Americas Society/Council of the Americas. The event will be held in New York City at the McGraw-Hill Building, 1221 Avenue of the Americas, on April 12.
"Despite the inherent volatility of emerging markets, we continue to see significant opportunities in the broader swathe of emerging markets outside of the BRIC countries," said Cynthia Stone, Managing Director and Chair of Emerging Markets Council, Standard & Poor's. (The BRIC countries are Brazil, Russia, India, and China.) "Although BRIC countries capture much of the attention, a number of other emerging markets merit a closer look as their economies evolve and stabilize. The conference will address issues relevant to these countries, explore some key trends in debt and equity financing, and review the wide array of investment vehicles used in emerging market economies," added Ms. Stone.
Standard & Poor's Chief Economist David Wyss also noted that, "The global growth outlook appears strong, and we expect the emerging economies to continue to grow more quickly than the developed economies, especially in terms of total GDP. Per capita GDP, however, will not catch up as rapidly, especially in Latin America and Africa, where birth rates are the highest. And growth will depend crucially on the continued expansion in the developed countries and Asia."
Standard & Poor's President Kathleen Corbet--along with Standard & Poor's analysts and outside experts--will outline some of the major themes affecting emerging market economies. Participants at the conference include:
-- Sarah Alexander, President, Emerging Markets Private Equity Association (EMPEA).
-- Alka Banerjee, Vice President, Global Index Management, Standard & Poor's.
-- Teresa Barger, Director, Corporate Governance, World Bank & International Finance Corp.
