Bangkok--17 Apr--PC & Associates
Five major companies, i.e. Hewlett-Packard, Seiko, Epson Corporation, Canon Kabushiki Kaisha, Samsung Electronics, and Brother Industries Ltd., joined forces with police officers of the Economic and Cyber-Crime Division (“ECOTEC”) directed by Pol.Maj.Gen. Visut Vanichbutr in order to raid a warehouse located at Nimitmai Road, Saikongdin Sub District, Klongsamwa District, Bangkok. This raid action resulted in a seizure of more than 100,000 items of infringing products.
The enforcement officials also gained access to a warehouse used for packing and storing fake ink cartridges, toners, stickers, and holograms used in the production of fakes. The estimated value of the counterfeit toner/ink cartridges/ribbons is over 1 million Baht. This represents the most significant seizure of counterfeit products from any warehouse so far this year. The owner of the warehouse was charged with trademark infringement offenses, which carry a maximum penalty of four years of imprisonment or a fine of Baht 400,000, or both.
Tilleke & Gibbins International Ltd., the legal consultant for all five companies, stated that they are maintaining their commitment to stamp out the presence of fake ink/toner cartridges/ribbons in the Thai market as part of ongoing efforts to ensure that Thai consumers are not harmed by the criminal activities of infringers. As a part of this program, they plan to undertake extensive raids against factories, warehouses, and retail shops, both in Bangkok and upcountry, to sweep all counterfeit products out of the Thai market.
On behalf of all five companies, the representatives also expressed that they will coordinate efforts with ECOTEC in the suppression of IPRs infringement to rid the market of fakes. The IPR owners were pleased that police acted out of concern that consumers could be deceived about the origin and quality of these questionable products and are hopeful that the Royal Thai Police’s campaign against manufacturers and retailers of such dubious products will be sustained. The companies and their legal consultant pledge their continuing support for these enforcement efforts.
