Panya, Tata and Khun Ying Dr Porntip rank top in list of “positivity idols” as part of youth attitude survey
Almost 70% of Thai teenagers believe that positive thinking can help them to overcome life’s challenges. This was the key finding of a survey conducted by Suan Dusit Poll on behalf of Coca-Cola Thailand Ltd., a survey that also revealed Panya Nirankul to be the country’s foremost “positivity idol”.
“Through this survey we wanted to learn more about the attitudes of Thai teenagers particularly in the arena of positive and negative thinking and how it relates to happiness,” said Krobkaew Panyarachun, IMC manager, Coca-Cola Thailand Limited. “The Thai teenagers that took part in the survey demonstrated a fundamental appreciation of the benefits of positive thinking, a concept at the heart of the Coke Side of Life campaign that was launched in Thailand earlier this year,” Krobkaew added.
Over 90% of respondents described themselves as either “optimistic” or “very optimistic” about the future of their lives. The survey also asked the respondents to imagine how they would feel under various challenging circumstances that teenagers typically encounter. If they were scolded by their teacher or boss, a stubbornly optimistic 65% of respondents claimed that they would “accept the criticism because they want to improve” themselves. A determined 60% of respondents also claimed that if they were dumped by a boyfriend of girlfriend they would be able to look on the bright side of life with an “It’s ok, I will have a chance to meet nice people in the future and I’m now more experienced” attitude.
“Amongst psychologists, the power of positive thinking is widely acknowledged and has been confirmed by various scientific studies,” said Dr. Anchulee Khuwuthyakorn, Psychiatrist, Samitivej Srinakarin Hospital. “People who have the ability to think positively about the situations they are faced with tend to be happier in their lives. Therefore the survey results confirm that Thai teenagers are on the right track in terms of their outlook,” Dr. Anchulee added.
One of the key questions in the survey asked respondents who they consider to be their “Positvity Idol”, based on certain criteria such as: ability to remain calm and smile in challenging situations; ability to bounce back quickly after suffering setbacks; and ability to inspire other people to be positive. The top five on the list, in order, were Panya Nirankul (26%), Tata Young (13%), Khun Ying Dr. Pornthip Rojansunan (12%), Nut Meria (11%) and Orn Sarawut Marthong (6%).
Finally, when asked what they do to pick themselves up when they are feeling down, over a third of respondents claimed that they choose to listen to music.
