THE CENTER FOR INTERNATIONAL PRIVATE ENTERPRISE invites you to a roundtable discussion on Presidential Power and Fiscal Crises in Argentina with Miguel Braun, Ph.D. Policy Director, Argentine Center for the Implementation of Public Policies Promoting Equity and Growth (CIPPEC)
As Argentina gears up for the national presidential and legislative elections to be held in October 2007, the political and economic challenges the country is facing are beginning to capture the headlines. Argentinas weak federal fiscal institutions lie at the core of many of problems the country is facing, as the system in its current state exacerbates pervasive inequalities, corrupt practices, and instability. One of the reasons for the failures of the fiscal system is lack of civil society participation in the policymaking process; instead, policy is adopted and implemented in a top-down manner by the Executive Branch. Consequently, Argentinas fiscal policy is not built on a solid, rules-based foundation, but rather is an outcome of the interaction between economic shocks and flawed institutions.
Join us as Dr. Braun discusses why Argentina has experienced recurring economic and political crises, often caused by fiscal problems. He will also touch on the role that politicians could but do not play to stem these crises.
Miguel Braun received his Ph.D. and MA in economics from Harvard University and a BA in Economics, summa cum laude, from Universidad de San Andrs in Buenos Aires, Argentina. In 2000, he co-founded CIPPEC, a think tank dedicated to policy research and implementation in Argentina, and became director of the Fiscal Policy Area. He teaches at Universidad de San Andrs, where he also served on the Advisory Council, and has worked as a consultant for the Inter-American Development Bank, the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean, and the World Bank on several projects related to institutional development, fiscal policy, and social spending in Argentina.
