Bangkok--24 Apr--SET
Federation of Thai Capital Market Organizations (FeTCO) will host a large forum on May 3 bringing together market practitioners to share their insights and suggestions on how to restore confidence in the market and make it more robust. The event, coming before the general election, will be an opportune time to analyze economic and investment conditions.
The forum will begin with a keynote address: “Views of the Thai economy: reflections from the capital market”, followed by a panel discussion on “Thai economy and capital market before the general election” on May 3, 2007, between 09:00 — 12:00 hours at the SET Building, The Stock Exchange of Thailand, (SET) President and FeTCO Board Secretary Ms. Patareeya Benjapolchai announced.
The seminar (or forum) will consider how to strengthen market resistance to domestic and international turbulence, and its key role in the national economy.
“This event will deliver suggestions and policy recommendations to government, emphasizing capital market promotion in H2/2007 to ensure that the market continues to be an effective driver of the Thai economy,” Ms. Patareeya said.
The panel discussion will cover economic and market trends, risk factors and the pre-election investment climate.
Over the past decade SET has enabled private corporations to raise THB 1.7 trillion (about USD 48.57 billion) and currently has 9 million people participating as direct and indirect investors. Obviously, the stock market, with a capitalization of THB 5 trillion (approx. USD 142.86 billion), is a crucial part of the economy, an important fundraising source and essential for Thailand’s long-term economic development. National policy should reflect this, and the coming seminar will provide government with some useful suggestions.
The seminar panelists will be Kongkiat Opaswongkarn, Ph.D., FeTCO Chairman; Mr. Prasert Bunsumpun, President, PTT PCL; Supavud Saicheua, Ph.D., Managing Director (Head of Research Group) of Phatra Securities PCL; and Mr. Visit Tantisunthorn, Secretary-General, Government Pension Fund. The session will be moderated by Kobsak Pootrakool, Ph.D., from Bank of Thailand’s Monetary Policy Group and advisor to SET Research Institute.
“Changes in political and economic conditions have had an effect on many stakeholders, including both retail and institutional investors, and listed companies.
“The seminar will be a good opportunity to learn from the insights and information provided by panelists who represent these stakeholder groups. The Government Pension Fund has 1.2 million members in Thailand and is involved in the capital market as securities owners. PTT, a large listed firm, has been using the capital market as a fundraising source in various ways. There are also representatives from the securities industry and capital market organizations. Their analyses will enable all related parties to prepare for challenges and collaborate in restoring confidence in the market, which will enhance the stability of both the capital market and the overall economy,” Ms. Patareeya concluded.
