Bangkok--12 Oct--CIPE THE CENTER FOR INTERNATIONAL PRIVATE ENTERPRISE invites you to a roundtable discussion on Global Trends and Transitions: 2007 Survey of Think Tanks with James McGann Director, Think Tanks and Civil Societies Program, Foreign Policy Research Institute For the past two years, the Think Tanks and Civil Societies Program at the Foreign Policy Research Institute (FPRI) carried out an extensive research on trends affecting public policy research organizations. As part of the process, FPRI surveyed more than 1,000 think tanks from 134 countries. The broad picture emerging from this survey is one of a dynamic global think tank community. Many of the institutions, however, are fragile because of the shifting priorities of private foundations and international donors, as well as a lack of indigenous support. In the changing marketplace of ideas, the survey finds, new and old think tanks of all types have been compelled to rethink their strategies for engaging and influencing policymakers, the press, and the public. Join us as James McGann discusses the results of this survey and implications for think tanks around the world. He will explore key findings, which include a major shift away from advocacy-oriented activities, a dramatic decline in analysis of environmental issues, a rise in analysis of international development and cooperation, and a decline in the growth of think tanks worldwide - especially in Africa and Eastern Europe. James McGann is an FPRI Senior Fellow and director of its Think Tanks and Civil Societies Program. He is also an assistant professor of political science at Villanova University and president and founding partner of McGann Associates, a program and management consulting firm specializing in the challenges facing think tanks, policymakers, international organizations, and philanthropic institutions. Dr. McGann has served as a consultant and advisor to the World Bank; the UN; USAID; the Soros, Hewlett, and Gates foundations, and foreign governments on the role of non-governmental organizations, public policy, and public engagement in civil society. He has also served as senior vice president for the Executive Council on Foreign Diplomats, public policy program officer for The Pew Charitable Trusts, assistant director of the Institute of Politics at the John F. Kennedy School of Government of Harvard University, and senior advisor to the Citizens Network for Foreign Affairs and the Society for International Development. 12:00 - 2:00 PM - Wednesday, October 17, 2007 Center for International Private Enterprise Madison Building 1155 15th Street, NW - Suite 700 Washington, D.C. 20005 *Lunch will be served* To RSVP for this event, email [email protected]
