IBM’s corporate volunteer program hailed as world's largest with 100,000 participants and 6 million hours of service

Bangkok--12 Dec--IBM IBM Thailand revealed that after the initiation of IBM's On Demand Community since 2003, the company's community service program, a global army of IBM volunteers have been dedicating to work with the visually impaired and physically handicapped, to the homeless and students in need of mentoring, IBM's corporate volunteer program stretches around the world with over 100,000 IBM volunteers serving in nearly 100 countries and also logging in aggregate more than 6 million hours of service. IBM has also generated the On Demand Community website on the site for employees to use and help initiate technology plans, improve project management skills and improve overall productivity in schools and non profits. In addition, IBM has added new collaborative tools to enable employees and retirees to connect with each other to solve problems together and share solutions around the world. The company will also enable its employees to apply volunteer-related experiences to their professional development. At present, IBM has approximately 350,000 employees worldwide and there is a large number of regular employee volunteers and also retirees from several countries participating in the program Countries with the highest level of participating employees are consisted of Peru, Vietnam, Uruguay, Hong Kong, Portugal, Colombia and Thailand. IBM Thailand has currently been promoting the On Demand Community Program to all employees, including new comers, current employees, and retirees and the number of IBM Thailand volunteers participating to the program is now reaching to 228 persons. This number is positioning IBM Thailand on the top three ranking in ASIA Pacific. During the past few years, IBM Thailand has been continuously creating a variety of programs and activities in response to On Demand Community Program which support employees’ works and life balance and also get them to dedicate their owned time for helping society as voluntary basis. Several activities aim to enhance people’s education, health and so on such as ‘EXITE Camp’ that aims to build generation-next in IT among girl students, or ‘the World Community Grid’ program that campaigns all IBMers to take part in energy saving and donating (idle capacity) in order to support power consumption of any researches or experiments against AIDS. Beside this, The activities are also to assist people in less opportunity in term of financial, software and tools. The first excellent volunteer of IBM Thailand, Kumchai Laokosin, Software sales and Software Information Technology Architect, served as a mentor for training rural teachers under the E-learning program of Distance Learning Foundation (DLF) under the Royal Patronage of His Majesty the King. He educated the teachers with interactive software, developed by IBM in order to enhance and ease E-learning programs as a two way communications.
