THAI Provides Assistance to Cyclone Nargis Survivors in Myanmar

Bangkok--13 May--Thai Airways Thai Airways International Public Company Limited announced that the company is providing humanitarian assistance to survivors of Cyclone Nargis by transporting relief goods to the Union of Myanmar. Flg. Off. Apinan Sumanaseni, THAI’s President, Thai Airways International Public Company Limited, said that following the natural disaster in the Union of Myanmar as a result of Cyclone Nargis, the company provided assistance in the form of relief goods and food supplies since 5 May 2008, which was the first day that flight operations were conducted after the cyclone and after THAI received clear notification of disaster survivors’ needs. The company has donated 90,000 relief good items and transported them to the Union of Myanmar, those being blankets and tableware consisting of plates, dishes, spoons, and cups, dry foods, water, medicine, clothes. Relief goods were transported on flight TG305 on Tuesday, 13 May 2008, departure from Bangkok at 17:50 hours and arrival in Yangon on 18:45 hours. On 3 May 2008, Cyclone Nargis impacted the Union of Myanmar, which resulted in temporary suspension of the company’s flights to Yangon on 3 and 4 May 2008. As a result of the cyclone, electricity went out and the country of Myanmar experienced substantial damage and losses. The company eventually resumed normal flight operations with return flights on the route Bangkok-Yangon v.v. at 2 flights per day, the departure flights TG303 and TG305 and return flights TG304 and TG306, utilizing aircraft type Airbus A300-600. THAI began operating to the Union of Myanmar in year 1960, utilizing aircraft type DC10 at 3 flights per week. Passengers increased regularly over the years, resulting in an increase to today’s current flight frequency of 14 flights per week on the return route Bangkok-Yangon v.v., with a cabin factor of 70-80%. Following the natural disaster that took place over a week ago, the cabin factor remains regular. THAI has provided assistance to its 90 employees based in Yangon since the first day that the natural disaster struck. Furthermore, THAI also provided emergency humanitarian assistance to Chengdu, located in the southwestern Sichuan province in the People’s Republic of China, following the earthquake on a scale of 7.8 Richter that took place on 12 May 2008 in a location near to Chengdu. THAI assisted in transporting relief goods on the company’s flights to Chengdu.
