Telenor records strong performance in Asia

Bangkok--25 Jun--Hill & Knowlton Telenor, one of the world’s largest mobile operators, announced that the company has achieved a total mobile subscription base of over 150 million, largely attributed to its Asian markets in Thailand (DTAC), Malaysia (DiGi), Pakistan (Telenor Pakistan) and Bangladesh (Grameenphone), during the Group’s ‘Capital Markets Day 2008’ in Oslo, Norway. "The four Asian companies in the Telenor Group contributed significantly to our growth and we are delighted to achieve these milestones, after announcing the 100 million subscription mark only a year and a half ago. As one of the fastest growing providers of mobile communications services worldwide, we are well-positioned for future growth," said Telenor Deputy CEO and Head of Region Asia, Arve Johansen. With 40 percent or 60 million subscriptions based in Asia of a total of more than 150 million, Telenor is the largest non-Asian mobile operator in the region. According to the latest figures released by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), Telenor Pakistan is currently the second largest cellular operator in Pakistan, with a subscription base of 17.84 million. Meanwhile, Grameenphone, the largest telecommunications service provider in Bangladesh, recorded 20 million subscriptions out of the country’s 42.04 million subscriptions this month. Subscription numbers of DTAC and DiGi, in Thailand and Malaysia were respectively 16.66 million and 6.55 million during the first quarter of 2008.
