Bangkok--24 Jul--The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Each year, nearly 5 million people —14,000 every day — are killed by tobacco, more than are killed by any other single agent. Tobacco now accounts for more than one in 10 adult deaths. Unless urgent action is taken, the number of people killed by tobacco will double in the coming decades and one billion people will be killed by tobacco in this century. To reverse the global tobacco epidemic, the Bloomberg Initiative supports adoption of the MPOWER interventions, all of which are proven to be effective: 1. Monitor tobacco use and prevention policies 2. Protect people from tobacco smoke 3. Offer help to quit tobacco use 4. Warn about the dangers of tobacco 5. Enforce bans on tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorship 6. Raise taxes on tobacco Focus Countries: Low- and middle-income countries, particularly China, India, Indonesia, Russia, and Bangladesh, which have approximately half of the world’s smokers, as well as other countries with large numbers of smokers.
