Bangkok--8 Aug--UNISBKK The Special Rapporteur on the situation of Human Rights in Myanmar, Tomas Ojea Quintana, completes his visit to Myanmar The United Nations Human Rights Council Special Rapporteur on the situation of Human Rights in Myanmar, Tomas Ojea Quintana, completed his visit to Myanmartoday. The Special Rapporteur would like to express his appreciation to the authorities for their cooperation during this mission. The Special Rapporteur had constructive meetings with the Government, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Labour and the Ministry of Home Affairs. He also met with Chief of Myanmar Police Force. He met with national NGOs including the Myanmar Red Cross, Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association and Myanmar Women's Federation. The Special Rapporteur met with the Tripartite Core Group (TCG), and also traveled to areas affected by Cyclone Nargis. He visited Laputta, Kyaukalat, Pyinsalu and Kyet Shar. He took note of progress made in the recovery phase in the aftermath of the disaster. The Special Rapporteur visited Insein Prison and spoke in private with U Win Tin, Thurein Aung, Kyaw Kyaw, Su Su Nway and U Gambira. The Special Rapporteur's visit to KayinStatewas unfortunately cancelled due to rainy weather. The Special Rapporteur met with representatives of political parties including National League of Democracy and the 88 Generation Student Youth (Union of Myanmar). The Special Rapporteur had two constructive meetings with Human Rights Body. The Special Rapporteur also held meetings with representatives of the National Convention and with the Referendum Holding Commission. The Special Rapporteur had also meetings with the Diplomatic Community and the United Nations Country Team in Myanmar. The Special Rapporteur will present his findings and recommendations in his forthcoming report to the General Assembly. The Special Rapporteur has already discussed with the authorities the possibility of his second mission before reporting to the Human Rights Council in March 2009.
