This course provides students with in-depth coverage of web application programming in Java using the Java Servlet API. Java servlets, a server extension technology commonly used for creating dynamic web content, are a fast, powerful, portable alternative to CGI scripts. The course begins by explaining the role and advantages of servlets. Included are lessons and lab exercises on servlet debugging, image generation with servlets, server-side includes, servlet chaining, applet-servlet communication and session tracking. This course also covers the basic concepts of Java database programming using Java Database Connectivity (JDBC) and parsing XML documents using JAXP. Finally, the course provides in-depth coverage of JavaServer Pages (JSP) and how to best use Servlet and JSP to create dynamic web content.
