Bangkok--14 Oct--UNISBKK What are the implications of the Asia-Pacific region’s continued and deepening dependency on fossil fuels to meet its development goals? What key factors are contributing to energy “insecurity” and “threatening” to derail progress to attaining sustainable development and the landmark Millennium Development Goals? These are questions that the United Nations’ senior-most official for Asia and the Pacific will address this week in a discussion, entitled “Securing Asia Energy Future,” at one of the world’s leading think tanks on Asia, the Asia Society — and citizens from the Asia-Pacific region will also have the chance to pose questions on this topic to her directly. The Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific, UN Under-Secretary-General Noeleen Heyzer, will speak this Thursday on the link between energy security and sustainable development in Asia and the Pacific — and the need for a paradigm shift — at the Asia Society’s New York headquarters, as part of the Society’s Asian Social Issues Programme.
