Bangkok--22 Oct--UN
17 entities to highlight the work of the UN in human rights
The work of the United Nations will be the focus of a multi-media exhibition in Bangkok this week, where members of the public are invited for a closer look at the work of the United Nations as it celebrates its 63rd “birthday” this Friday.
Bangkok is the regional hub for the United Nations system in Asia and the Pacific. In order to better inform the Thai public about the UN’s work and achievements, 17 UN agencies and programmes with offices in Bangkok will be holding a “One UN” exhibition at Bangkok’s biggest shopping complex, CentralWorld, between 23-26 October. As this year is the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the exhibition’s over-arching theme will be human rights.
Members of the press are invited to attend the exhibition’s opening ceremony at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, 23 October, at CentralWorld’s 2nd Eden floor, when entering the building from the skywalk linking the shopping complex to the skytrain system.
Senior UN officials and representatives from the UN Association of Thailand and CentralWorld will deliver remarks at the opening. There will also be musical performances.
The United Nations was formally established on 24 October 1945, after a majority of its founding members ratified a treaty setting up the world body. The anniversary of that event has been celebrated as United Nations Day since 1948. It has traditionally been marked throughout the world by meetings, discussions and exhibits on the achievements and goals of the organization.
The UN agencies and programmes taking part in the exhibition are: the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the International Labour Organization (ILO), the Joint
United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the United Nations
Population Fund (UNFPA), the World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Bank.
