Listed companies on The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) posted 9M/2008 profits at THB 394.17 billion (approx. USD 11.26 billion) and total sales at THB 5,753.16 billion (approx. USD 164.38 billion). The top three industry groups were, in descending order of profitability, Resources, Financials and Property and Construction. The top five firms, in descending order of profitability, were PTT, PTTEP, SCC, SCB and ADVANC
For 9 M/2008, 469 of 498 SET-listed companies, including 21 property funds, showed a combined net profit of 26% more than for the same period in 2007, while total sales increased by 35% year-on-year (y-o-y). Among those firms which submitted reports, 388 posted net profits, while 81 reported net losses - an 83:17 ratio.
Meanwhile, total profits for Q3/2008 were THB 97.85 billion (approx. USD 2.79 billion), or a 6% decrease y-o-y, while total sales were THB 2,006.45 billion (approx. USD 57.33 billion), a rise of 34% y-o-y, SET President Patareeya Benjapolchai noted.
“Listed companies’ overall earnings reports for Q3/2008 showed an increase in both net profits and sales, demonstrating the strong opportunity and potential in Thailand’s industrial sector despite the global financial crisis,” Ms. Patareeya concluded.
SET100 Index firms racked up THB 325.57 billion (approx. USD 9.30 billion) in net profit, a 16% increase y-o-y, with total sales rising by 40%. Meanwhile, SET50 companies recorded total net profit of THB 297.91 billion (approx. USD 8.51 billion), or an 18% rise y-o-y, with total sales rising by 41% y-o-y.
The 453 listed firms in the eight industry groups (excluding companies in the non-compliance and non-performing groups) saw total net profit of THB 390.18 billion , a 23 % increase y-o-y.
In order of descending net profitability, the industry groups’ results are as follows:
1. Resources Industry Group: (consisting of the Energy and Utilities and Mining sectors) This group’s combined net profit was THB 153.48 billion an increase of 2% y-o-y.
2. Financials Industry Group: (consisting of the Banking, Finance and Securities and Insurance sectors) This industry group’s combined net profit was THB 78.59 billion , a 199 % increase
y-o-y.
3. Property and Construction Industry Group: (consisting of the Property Development and Construction Materials sectors, plus Property Funds) This industry group’s combined net profit was THB 45.84 billion , a y-o-y decrease of 22%.
4. Industrials Industry Group: (consisting of the Petrochemicals and Chemicals, Industrial Materials and Machinery, Packaging, Paper and Printing Materials and Automotive sectors) This group’s combined net profit was THB 37.96 billion , a y-o-y increase of 77%.
5. Technology Industry Group: (consisting of the Information and Communication Technology and Electronic Components sectors) This group’s combined net profit amounted to THB 34.71 billion , a rise of 34% over Q3/2007 y-o-y
6. Services Industry Group: (consisting of Commerce, Media and Publishing, Health Care Services, Tourism and Leisure, Professional Services and Transportation and Logistics sectors) This group posted a combined net profit of THB 18.39 billion an decrease of 21% on Q3/2007 y-o-y
7. Agro and Food Industry Group: (consisting of the Food and Beverage and Agribusiness sectors) This group’s net profit was THB 16.96 billion , an increase of 112% y-o-y.
8. Consumer Products Industry Group: (consisting of Home and Office Products, Personal Products and Pharmaceuticals and Fashion sectors) This group posted a net profit of THB 4.25 billion, a y-o-y increase of 48%.
