Nokia has joined Central Group, World Wildlife Fund (WWF), Playhound, recycling company TES-AMM and the Thai Association of Landscape Architects (TALA) to launch the “Nokia Loves Earth” campaign to raise awareness about phone recycling. Being a green company, Nokia encourages people to drop any brand of unused phones and accessories at Nokia take-back boxes located nationwide from today until 14 February 2009. The items dropped into the take-back boxes will be recycled into a variety of uses.
Ms. Una Tan, Head of Marketing, Nokia (Thailand) Ltd., said, “The Nokia Loves Earth campaign aims to increase the recycling rate for unused mobile devices. A recent Nokia global consumer survey showed that only three percent of people recycle their mobile phones, even though most have old devices lying around at home that they no longer want. Three out of four people added that they don't even think about recycling their devices and nearly half were unaware that it’s even possible to do so. If each of the three billion people globally who own mobiles brought back just one unused device, we could save 240,000 tonnes of raw materials and reduce greenhouse gases to the same level as taking four million cars off the road. By working together, small individual actions can add up to make a big difference.
"Using the best recycling technology, nothing is wasted. Up to 80 percent of a Nokia device can be recycled. Plastics that can't be recycled are burned to provide energy for the recycling process, while other materials are ground into chips and used as construction materials or for building roads. In this way, nothing has to go to a landfill," she said.
Busaba Chirathivat, Central Retail Corporation’s senior vice-president for corporate communications said, “Central Group is pleased to be part of the Nokia Loves Earth campaign, which reflects our own vision of encouraging environmental responsibity. With take-back boxes located at Central department stores and Power Buy shops, it will be easy and convenient for users to join in this program and play a part in reducing waste.”
Help make a difference with the Nokia Loves Earth campaign by dropping your unused mobile device or accessory in one of the take-back boxes located at the 12 Nokia Care Centers, 23 Nokia Shops, Playhound shops, Power Buy locations in Bangkok and Central department stores (Central World Plaza, Pinklao, Ladprao, Rama II, Rama III and Jangwattana). Simply put your name and contact details on the phone to qualify to win in a lucky draw for three Nokia 5800 XpressMusic phones, a total value of 35,000 Baht.
Available only at the 12 Nokia Care Centers, 23 Nokia Shops and Playhound shops, the first 8,000 mobile phones dropped off at the take-back boxes will receive a limited-edition phone pouch made from recycled materials, designed by Playhound, valued at 700 Baht.
In addition, Nokia and TES-AMM will each donate 25 baht for every phone dropped off to support WWF Thailand in exploratory co-management interventions in Kuiburi National Park in central Thailand, including human-elephant conflict mitigation.
