New Software Plug-In Makes ProxySG Traffic Visible to PacketShaper Appliance for Application Identification and Granular Quality of Service
Blue Coat Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: BCSI), the leader of WAN Application Delivery and Secure Web Gateway, today announced that it has completed a major milestone in the integration between Blue Coat ProxySG and Blue Coat PacketShaper appliances to provide enterprises with increased visibility and control of applications, content and malicious threats on their networks. The new software plug-in enables the two appliances to share information, allowing enterprises to more effectively utilize their networks to deliver critical business applications.

The new plug-in enables PacketShaper appliances to receive optimized traffic from ProxySG appliances and then distinguish and prioritize different classes for optimal application delivery. With the new capability, PacketShaper appliances can differentiate internal applications from Internet traffic and provide priority to essential enterprise applications, such as SAP. PacketShaper appliances can also differentiate between back-up and real-time traffic, providing quality of service (QoS) for real-time communications, such as quality-sensitive voice and video-related applications.
With the new software plug-in, PacketShaper appliances can further classify or manage traffic that has been optimized or treated by ProxySG appliances, rather than only seeing a single block of undifferentiated traffic. The plug-in provides a unique capability to ProxySG appliances, as PacketShaper appliances can only see a single tunnel of traffic from all other WAN optimization appliances. The new software plug-in enables PacketShaper appliances to understand traffic from ProxySG appliances using its classification abilities and then apply QoS to it.
Blue Coat ProxySG appliances provide WAN optimization and Web security to accelerate business-critical applications and content while stopping or managing malicious or unimportant applications and content.
Acceleration or control is based on the identification and understanding of users and Web applications, a fine-grained ability to set policy and a range of acceleration and control technologies. PacketShaper appliances provide extensive classification of non-Web applications together with the ability to provide QoS or traffic shaping. When used in tandem, the appliances provide a comprehensive infrastructure for WAN optimization, Web security and application performance monitoring.

Blue Coat is committed to the functional integration of the ProxySG appliances and the PacketShaper appliances, a product which it gained from its acquisition of Packeteer, Inc. in June 2008. The new software plug-in is available immediately and is free of charge to PacketShaper customers with a current maintenance agreement. It expands the combined abilities of PacketShaper and ProxySG appliances to provide enterprises and organizations with increased awareness and control of applications, content and malicious threats.
