ข่าวท่องเที่ยว Wednesday December 24, 2008 14:43 —PRESS RELEASE LOCAL

Bangkok--24 Dec--JW Marriott Phuket Resort & Spa As the sun set on Mai Khao Beach on Wednesday the 17th of December, at least 200 people watched with an appreciation of nature and the turtles that once came to nest on Mai Khao Beach. The Earth Hour Picnic was the final event in the Mai Khao Marine Turtle Foundation’s Environmental Awareness & Solutions Project for 2008. This picnic brought together Thai and foreigners in two different areas of Mai Khao Beach. JW Marriott Phuket Resort & Spa along with the newly opened Anantara Phuket arranged picnics for guests on the beach in front of their resorts. Lights were switched off and torches and candles were used along with minimal lighting for the guests’ safety. Activities included sand turtle painting and sea shell decorating of three huge Leatherback turtles made out of sand. 59 guests purchased picnic baskets for this event. The profits of these baskets were donated to the Foundation. The local picnic for the villagers took place about 3 kilometers south of the resorts in the village of Mai Khao Moo 4. Around 50 students and teachers from Rajabhat University along with 50 associates and managers from West-Sands enjoyed a delicious dinner wrapped in banana leaves provided by West-Sands. The senior vice president of the Thalang District, government officials, teachers from schools in the district and other foreigners living in the area also joined the picnic. The aim of this picnic was to revive the traditional “Marine Turtle Walks” that were once a popular outing for Mai Khao Villagers at the time when giant Leatherback turtles came to lay their eggs during the months of November to February. The aim was also to reduce energy used in the Mai Khao District for just one hour while bringing awareness regarding how we can all reduce Global Warming. For more information on reducing Global Warming, please see our website from January 2009 onwards where we will download tips that can be used by all to assist with the great problem we are facing. If we all do our share day by day, as little as it may seem, we may be able to buy time for our future generations. Together we can make a start!
