Bangkok--4 Feb--The Westin Grande Sukhumvit
Valentine's Day, 14 February, is a day of celebrating our love for that special someone through the exchange of special gestures, sweet gifts and through the enjoyment of sumptuous food together.
The actual day has mixed roots with some claiming it reaches as far back as the 3rd Century with St Valentine of Rome whom secretly married couples and was then left gifts or flowers as thanks. Legend has it that before being carried off to his fate he gave a note to the prison guard’s daughter thanking her for her support and signed it “Your Valentine”. Some mark the date as 1382 with a poem written by Geoffrey Chaucer to celebrate the engagement of King Richard II of England to Anne of Bohemia, which is claimed to be the first association of love with Valentine
The modern Valentine’s celebration as we know it today, in its simplest form, is in the act of card giving. Valentine’s Day card giving first commenced on a mass scale in the late 1840’s by Esther Howland of Massachusetts, whose father owned a book and stationery store. She was inspired by an English Valentine she received which she later created to sell through her father’s shop.
