“Investors have everything to gain by holding their securities in scripless form — and at no extra cost. They should take more advantage of these benefits,” Ms. Sopawadee Lertmanaschai, Chief Marketing Officer-Market & Post-Trade Services, The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET), noted.
“A recent news report claimed that counterfeit securities certificates of a listed firm have appeared. We strongly advise investors to examine all documents relating to a trade, especially if there is a delegation of power of attorney, and urge investors to use our scripless system. Holdings in scripless form are recorded and kept under very tight security, reducing the risk of damaged, lost or counterfeit certificates. Investors will receive a report every month if trading is active, or every six months if inactive. They can check the status of their holdings conveniently and trade their securities whenever they wish,” she continued.
“Investors using our scripless system will receive every privilege that those holding paper certificates get, plus added convenience. Every time there is any change affecting the securities certificates, Thailand Securities Depository Co., Ltd. (TSD), a SET subsidiary, will automatically update the investor’s record and inform him or her immediately,” added Ms. Sopawadee.
As of January 2009, approximately 80% of all securities certificates of listed firms were deposited in scripless system. TSD expects that scripless system participation will reach its target of 85% of deposits within 2009. Aside from increasing convenience and thus saving investors time, TSD’s scripless system facilitates operations of brokerages and listed companies and vastly reduces paper usage, helping our environment.
Listed companies can service their shareholders by depositing securities certificates in TSD’s scripless system and opening issuer accounts to keep holdings. Investors can use all securities-related services through the account, i.e., adding to deposits, withdrawing in certificate form, or transferring certificates.
