THAI Catering Department was awarded the Mercury Award in Category 4, Skills Development at the ITCA’s (Inflight Travel Catering Association ) annual conference which was held in Barcelona, Spain from 10th to 12th February, 2009.
The award was received by Khun Smith Pirunsarn, the Managing Director of THAI Catering Department.
The Mercury Award is the highest award in the Airline Inflight Services area and is given each year since 1982 to companies that have initiated projects that have improved the industry especially with respect to innovation and over the last two years with a higher degree of environmental sustainability.
The Competition open to all companies involved in the Travel catering industry had this year achieved the highest number of entries in a decade with more than 40 entries fighting for the trophies in the 6 different categories.
The presentation to the judges took place in London in January and Thai’s team consisted of Khun Sompote Sukarochanee, Director On-Ground Production and Services, Mr . Odd Engebretsen , Catering Services Specialist and Khun Piroon Songjakkaew, Division Manager Production Planning.
The program was initiated in 2003 between THAI Catering Department and Kasetsart University, the oldest Agricultural University of Thailand, to develop Contract Farming, for the purpose of improving the farmers knowledge of Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) and to secure that THAI Catering Department gets the best quality and the right specification of all fruit and vegetables.
The judges were impressed with the fact that the farmers get a better economical life style due to higher income for superior quality, Kasetsart University can give something back to the community where students can see theory turned into practice and Thai Catering Department gets a secure supply of safe and high quality rawmaterials.
This in the end means that passengers on board THAI’s flights and on flights from airlines that cater from THAI Catering Department can be sure that the food served on board is safe to eat.
This is the first time that THAI has entered the Mercury Award competition and THAI Catering Department are extremely proud to come home with the Mercury Award.
