NACE International, the corrosion society, has released its widely anticipated training course for oversight of marine vessel coatings, NACE Coating Inspector Program (CIP) Level 2, maritime emphasis. The course was created in response to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Performance Standard for Protective Coatings (PSPC), and is the only coating inspector program specified by the IMO with an emphasis on coating inspection in marine vessels.
NACE International and its approved licensees will facilitate the marine-focused coating inspection certification program. CIP Level 2 is a 6-day training course featuring hands-on and classroom training, and focuses on the requirements related to hull, ballast tank, and marine vessel coatings, and inspection instrumentation specific to the maritime industry.
The NACE International CIP program celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2008, and has certified over 15,000 coating inspectors in over 100 countries since its inception. In the past two years nearly 2,000 of the inspectors certified by NACE International are employed by the maritime industry.
"The demand for a specific program for this application became apparent to us, and working closely with our members and industry experts, we are pleased to announce the release of this course," said Tony Keane, executive director of NACE International. "With this emphasis, industry professionals now have the option to obtain the certification from NACE in this new discipline specific to the maritime industry."
New IMO PSPC standards for marine coatings and inspection elevate the expectations owners have placed on the long-term durability and reliability of new marine vessels. According to forecasts and build orders for marine vessel construction, and given the number of inspectors required to inspect the coatings of these vessels, it is estimated that 8,500 inspectors are needed to fulfill the worldwide demand by 2012.
Inspectors with three years verifiable experience in the maritime industry within the last five years, or those who have completed CIP Level 1 are qualified to register for the maritime version of CIP Level 2. For more information, visit www.nace.org/cip2marine.
