Professor H. Robert Horvitz, the 2002 Nobel Prize Laureate for Medicine, has accepted the invitation by the International Peace Foundation to deliver keynote speeches on “Biomedical science, world health and world peace” to share his knowledge with Thai science enthusiasts. The speeches are parts of the “Bridges — Dialogues Towards a Culture of Peace” event series initiated by the International Peace Foundation with the aim to support education as a basis for peace and to create an independent platform for dialogue that may lead to a new culture of peace.
Professor H. Robert Horvitz is a microbiologist who shared the 2002 Nobel Prize in Medicine for discoveries concerning the genetic regulation of organ development and programmed cell death. In a typical adult human about one trillion new cells develop each day; a similar number must be eliminated to maintain health. Knowledge about programmed cell death contributed to important advances not only in developmental biology but also in medicine, especially concerning cancer treatments.
