Bangkok--24 Mar--Image Impact This March, HISTORY? supports WWF’s Earth Hour by scheduling an evening of programmes that highlight the danger posed to the environment. During Earth Hour itself, HISTORY will suspend broadcast of all commercials and promos and replace them with a message to urge viewers to turn off lights in support of the initiative. On 28 March 2009, HISTORY will not air any television commercials or programme promotions for one hour between 7:30 — 8:30 pm and run Earth Hour messages instead in aid of awareness action for climate change. Across 9 countries and markets in Asia region, viewers who tune in to the channel will see a message during programme breaks that persuades them to participate in this green movement by turning off their lights for an hour. In the weeks leading up to the Earth Hour, HISTORY will be running on air the public service announcement “Vote Earth” by the World Wide Fund For Nature (WWF), as well as on its website to encourage viewers to take part in this worthy initiative. Louis Boswell, General Manager, AETN All Asia Networks, said, “HISTORY has always placed great emphasis on society and the preservation of our natural and cultural history. If we continue to ignore the global warming issue, all our recorded history and our future will be in great danger. To raise awareness of global warming, we will be taking part in Earth Hour by airing these messages on our channel and asking our viewers to participate. We hope that our viewers will be encouraged to take part in this initiative and make Earth Hour a major event throughout Asia.” To further awareness, HISTORY will also be airing a series of programmes related to the environment that evening: 5:00pm How the Earth was Made 7:00pm A Global Warning? (Earth Hour message in commercial break 7:30-8:30pm) 9:00pm Mega Disasters: Krakatoa’s Revenge 10:00pm Mega Disasters: Volcanic Winter Earth Hour is a global initiative spearheaded by WWF. On Saturday, March 28 2009, at 8:30pm individuals, businesses and community groups around the world are encouraged to turn out their lights and shut off their non-essential electricity for one hour to show that by working together we can make a difference in the fight against climate change. Amy Ho, Managing Director WWF-Singapore, said, "Climate change imperatives are urgency and a global effort. Every country, business and individual has a role to play in response to the scale and type of challenges arising. And we need to do it NOW. Earth Hour 2009 aims to show that it is possible to take action on global warming and the first step is as easy as turning off a light. In what we hope will be the world's largest mass participation event, Earth Hour will be the culmination of one billion people around the globe. WWF is thrilled to count History Channel on board and we are thankful for their support in answering the Earth Hour call and helping us spread the Earth Hour message across the region".
