Future leaders speak out at EU-Thailand Debate Competition

Bangkok--25 Mar--Thammasat In celebration of the 30th anniversary of Thailand and European Union relations, university and high school students from all around the country will lock horns in an intellectual combat at the 5th EU-Thailand National Intervarsity Debate Championship 2009 from April 18-21. Started off as a debate competition for Thammasat students, EU-Thailand has grown to become the nation’s largest English debate tournament. This year more than 200 debaters from every region of Thailand will compete for the championship title and claim the throne as Thailand’s best English debate team. The EU-Thailand National Intervarsity Debate Championship is an English debate competition organized by Thammasat Speakers’ Union with the support from the Delegation of the European Commission and the British and American Studies Programme, Thammasat University. The event aims to support and promote the debating culture which is a crucial element of democratic society. It also aims to encourage university students to develop the skills that are vital in professional careers. These include the ability to structure, develop and deliver one’s thought in a persuasive way, the capability to gain knowledge of a wide range of topics, the confidence to speak in front of the public, and the ability to react promptly to new ideas and crises The grand final of the 5th EU-Thailand National Intervarsity Debate Championship 2009 will be held on Tuesday 21st April at 13.00 — 16.00 at The Main Auditorium, Thammasat University, Tha Pra Chan. The event is open to the public free of charge. There will also be a Press Conference on Thursday 9th April at 9.00-12.00, at Prapas Auaychai room, 4th floor Anek Building, Thammasat University, Tha Pra Chan.
