Bangkok--22 Apr--UNISBKK
With the world focusing on the current economic crisis, an intricately related and equally critical threat is falling into the background — the food crisis, an issue that must be addressed while dealing with the economic recovery. The impact of food insecurity on the region and how to deal with it is the focus of a new UN study entitled Sustainable Agriculture and Food Security in Asia and the Pacific.
The study is produced by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) — the regional arm of the UN — and will be the focus of a ministerial round table on Monday, 27 April, during ESCAP’s annual Commission Session.
The study examines the environmental, economic and social challenges that are the roots of the region’s food insecurity and suggests a regional framework of action to be taken by governments and the international community in order to create greater security.
Noeleen Heyzer, UN Under-Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of ESCAP , will launch the study at 14:00 on Friday, 24 April, in Bangkok at the Foreign Correspondents' Club of Thailand (FCCT).
The ministerial round table will take place on Monday, 27 April, 14:30 — 16:45 at the United Nations Conference Centre, Rajdamnern Nok Avenue, Bangkok 10200. Among the speakers will be ministers from Bangladesh, China, Indonesia, Myanmar and Papua New Guinea. Dr. Heyzer, Dr. David Nabarro, Coordinator of the Task Force on the Global Food Security Crisis under the chairmanship of Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, and Ms.Ursula Schaefer-Preuss, Vice-President of the Asian Development Bank, will join the discussion. The event is open to the press.
