Nakornthon Hospital started 2009 by taking another step forward in its aim of being the number one provider of comprehensive healthcare services in the Thonburi area (Southern Bangkok) with the opening of its new, Bt15 million-baht ART Centre (ART Center - Assisted Reproductive Technology Center) for infertility treatment. The centre employs integrated medicine to ensure physical and mental readiness with a ‘heart-warming and caring’ concept.
Dr. Wiroj Trakarnwijit, Medical Director of Nakornthon Hospital welcomed the new medical centre as another success for Nakornthon.
“We plan to extend our customer base to become the Nakornthon Family Lifestyle Hub, ready to provide comprehensive medical care to patients of all ages through centres such as this,” he said.
“The hospital has allocated a large proportion of its budget to develop medical centres in all aspects through its Strategic Business Unit (SBU). So far, we have opened the Allergy Centre, the Wellness Centre, Cosmetic and Laser Centre and Thai Medical Spa focussing on holistic healthcare concepts with the aim to provide the best service.”
Nakornthon Hospital’s budget to implement the ART Center was 15 million baht. The process began with building international standard laboratories, then developing the medical personnel’s expertise in growing and caring for embryos. This is one of the few infertility clinics in Thailand to achieve international standards, and all operations are closely managed by Dr. Pisit Tantiwattanakul, Infertile Specialist of Nakornthon Hospital a graduate of Monash University in Australia.
“The spacious 130-square metre area of the ART Center can care for up to 10 patients a day,” said Dr. Wiroj. “Nakornthon Hospital is already receiving an encouraging response from the public, and hopes to reach the break-even point in three years.”
“The stress of modern life leads to a greater risk of infertility conditions,” explained Dr. Pisit Tantiwattanakul, Infertile Specialist of Nakornthon Hospital.
“There are two types of infertility, primary and secondary, with primary infertility affecting 3.3 per cent of couples who have been unable to achieve a pregnancy after one year of unprotected sex. Secondary infertility affects 15.8 percent of couples where pregnancy has been achieved once only.”
Assisted reproductive technologies provided at the new centre include IUI, GIFT, IVF, PROST, ICSI, ovum/embryo and sperm donation, surrogacy and Pre-implantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD). The holistic medical concept of ART Centre is focussed on the balance between physical and mental readiness. Nakornthon Hospital believes that its ‘heart-warming and caring’ approach will help patients to feel comfortable - the most important preparation for treatment.
“Stress is a major risk factor for pregnancy, and preventing it is important before and during pregnancy,” says Ajarn Sugunya Hongprapas, Traditional Thai medical practitioner.
“Certain alternative medicines are now accepted for their positive contribution to infertility treatment, such as traditional acupuncture and acupressure, as well as water and aroma therapy.”
Mae Chee Sansanee Sthirasuta of Sathira-Dhammasathan in Bangkok agrees. “The mental readiness of the mother and father is the most important for pregnancy,” she says. “As well as physical preparation, mental preparation will be a good start for your baby. When the mother’s heart is calm, getting pregnant will be easier and the baby will be healthy.”
ART Centre organizes continuous training for its medical staffs and plans to hold workshops on safe pregnancy and a mind spa where Buddhist teaching is applied to reduce mothers’ stress.
