“The 15 qualified entrepreneurs and exporters that receive the Award today have helped more than 13,000 local farmers, for example, through contract farming of 485,000 tons of fruits and vegetables and 1,600 tons of shrimp products accounting for 1.6 — 1.7 billion Baht, which is most complimenting. Besides, the SR Mark will also help create social responsibility awareness in the global community, as fair trades receive much interest both locally and internationally. As a result, this will help promote exportations as a source of income generation and drive our economy to prosperity.” Mrs. Porntiva said.
After the award presentation, the Ministry will publicize to the general public that products with SR Mark are products that will bring long term sustainability to the local farmers as the money that the consumers use to purchase SR Mark products will help contribute to the development of the local agricultural products and provide local farmers with sufficient incomes to upgrade their qualities of livings. At the same time, it will also help reduce government subsidy for agricultural products, since the more the consumers buy products with SR Mark means the more contract farming they need to do and the higher the success of the project.
Contract farming is a mechanism made to efficiently create confidence for all parties in term of price and future market demand. In this system, farmers will get fair prices and use the money earned to upgrade their qualities of livings, while developing their products in a way that is not harmful to the environment. At the same time, the entrepreneurs could efficiently control their quality and costs, be responsible for the community they live in and enhance their competitiveness in the world market. This sustainable cycle will also help the government reduce its subsidy and use tax in a more efficient way. In the long run, it is expected that SR Mark project will help make the government’s management of agricultural products more efficient to the extend that there would be no need for price pledging scheme in the future.
