HP today introduced the new HP PolyServe that extends virtualization beyond today’s most common virtual machine approaches. Its virtualization utilities for database and file serving provide full native performance and comprehensive 24/7 availability, as well as dramatic reductions in costs by reducing data duplication and time of migration and by reducing ongoing managerial costs. HP PolyServe thus extends the benefits of virtualization by supporting all range of server platforms or servers with specific configuration, even they run on the different versions of operating system.
HP PolyServe Software computing approach
The HP PolyServe “one-out-of-many” model or “Grid-enabled Virtualization” combines multiple processing and storage resources into a single pool that can be called upon as needed. Using the HP PolyServe Software and HP EFS Clustered Gateway software, IT administrators can dynamically move applications from an overloaded server to a server with extra available resources as easily as dragging and dropping an icon on a desktop.
HP PolyServe Software delivers high availability at a lower cost than other solutions by automatically restarting an application when a server fails—or when the application stops responding—on a surviving server, with no need for manual reconfiguration and virtually no impact on application performance. Customers find that the HP PolyServe Software reduces annual operational costs by up to 70%, while increasing business flexibility and performance that is far beyond the limits of current, server-based virtual machines.
The HP PolyServe difference
The heart of the HP PolyServe Software solution is Matrix Server, a “shared data” technology, which comprised of a symmetric cluster file system that enables scale-out performance, robust high availability, flexible capacity management, and simplified management.
Shared data technology allows any servers to see and access all the data within a storage area network (SAN) pool (allows LUN as a shared data). This data clustering allows many database or file servers to be aggregated as one large pool of compute and storage. It also virtualizes client connections to servers, eliminating the need for cumbersome manual reconfiguration of servers or storage when applications or data are moved to new platforms as the rise or fall of application needs.
Because all database data can be accessed by all servers, database instances can be moved easily between servers. There is no need to copy data to move a database instance from one server to another. Additional servers and storage can be added to a cluster or application with minimal impact on availability.
